Future Melbourne - building bigger or building better??

Melbourne's population is likely to hover around 8 million people in the not too distant future... How will the city respond to an ever increasing population? Do things need to change? What kinds of suburbs will need to develop to meet our needs?

We are going to become urban planners on trail! We will have the opportunity to meet with a lecturer from Melbourne University before visiting the Planning Institute of Australia. You'll take new insights & skills with you to the Docklands to complete an audit of it as a successful / unsuccessful suburb & use your findings to help you plan Melbourne's latest suburb: E-Gate, to be built between North Melbourne & Footscray. You'll be presenting as semi-professionals in the Metropolitan Planning Authority boardroom at the end of the day :)

Come ready to be creative & visionary!

New CBD Suburb - E-Gate, The Age, April 25

Bitcoin and business startup

Please note: If you choose this trail, you will be required to present a business plan to potential investors and they will decide whether they will invest in your company or not. It will require some preparation time at home.

Is traditional money the only way to pay for goods and services? Should the banks be the only ones who control the supply of money? Well, BITCOIN offers an alternative; its online, its easy to use and the banks aren't happy! Is this the future of money?

We will be spending the day at "The Village" - a business hub on Bourke Street, belonging to National Australia Bank. We will meet Asher Tan, founder of Coinjar (a bitcoin trading site). You will get a chance to marvel at the amazing workspaces of the future and ask questions about how to become a young entrepreneur.

The second half of the day will be a chance for YOU to present your business idea to a group of potential investors.

Learning goals addressed: PUBLIC SPEAKING, CONFIDENCE, DIVERGENT THINKING, CREATING AND ASKING QUESTIONS

Trail 1: The Languages of Melbourne

Today we are going to investigate the beauty of language.

We'll look at language from the perspective of culture and we'll examine the multilingualism of Melbourne.

We'll also visit CAE on flinders lane to take part in a body language class.

Finally, we'll be going to Melbourne University to meet with Prof. John Hajek, the head of Italian in the Dept. of Languages to talk about the benefits for your brain of learning a language.

All those people who chose "Multicultural Melbourne" as a learning goal, this is for you!!

It will be a fascinating trail and we aim to discover the importance of learning languages for the future.

Trail 2: The Future is When?

Join us as we investigate what our world - and specifically - your world, might look like as we hurtle towards the future.

We will analyse jobs in the community and determine if a robot could effectively replace human employees.

We will be participating in a tour and a workshop focused on 3D printing.

You'll have the opportunity to sit in on a university lecture & decide for yourself if this approach to education will meet the needs of the future.

Lastly - we will visit one of Melbourne's newest buildings dedicated to sustainable design.

FUTURES WEEK TRAILS:

If Robots are the future - what's the point of people?

Has the world hit fast forward with technological advances? Are we phasing out the need for people when it comes to jobs in service, education and community protection? How will that affect our lives?
What do we imagine the future of Melbourne to look like? To feel like? Do you imagine a place designed to maximise people and a sense of community? Or, do you imagine a place designed to maximise technology and efficiency? Can we achieve both?

We will travel through Melbourne observing, surveying, imagining and designing a possible future for ourselves.

Planning for the Future:

Unknown.png
Unknown.png

Reading the table to the right, look how much our population will increase by 2031!
Our job as citizens of Melbourne is to question what is needed in order to cope with the increase in population. We need to answer questions like:

Will there be enough space for us all to live? Will there be enough public transport? How much will it cost? Who will pay for it?Will all the parks disappear to make way for housing blocks?

On our trail we will try and answer these questions and we will design "Melbourne of the future"; our ideal vision of Melbourne in 20 years….

We will also talk to a city planner who will explain what is involved in planning for a city's future.

We will make observations about traffic congestion and survey people to find out what changes they would like to see as part of Melbourne's future.

Utopia Vs Dystopia

utopiadystopia.JPG
utopiadystopia.JPG

Is our future filled with personal jetpacks and robots anticipating our every need or is it more likely to be filled with hyper-surveillance and resemble a sci-fi movie gone wrong? On this trail we will begin by investigating ideas of utopia (a perfect society) and dystopia (the opposite) and imagining what our personal versions of these societies might look like.

Later we will look at technology and science fiction, a genre that speculates on these themes and look at the way writes/filmmakers have explored these themes in their work. As one of the key themes is technology, we will travel to the Screen Worlds exhibition to gather evidence to form an opinion on whether technology is likely to lead to a utopian or dystopian future.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION: The first part of our day will be spent at school discussing/debating and arguing over important topics like "Is the internet ultimately going to control our minds?" and "Are robots really out to get us?". Please only signup if you are willing to share your opinion and listen to the opinion of others! You need a netbook.
